ESO Demand Flexibility – The National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service is running again this winter to avoid having to fire up fossil fuel backup power at key peak times. Here’s how you can make the most of the scheme

We have been working with clients on figuring out how to maximise savings on these events and are happy to share our results –

If you are a customer that has battery storage you can actually use this to your advantage and earn money by following our tips –

Home owners are paid £2.25 to £4 per kWh saved during these sessions which means if you can utilise the battery to export during these times of the saving session you can earn up to £25 per session. On the 1st of December 2023 a saving session was announced and some suppliers were paying £4 per kWh saved from 16:30 until 18:00. If you can charger your battery prior to this even at 30p per kWh and then set your inverter to maximum discharge for this time you will be paid in return for this.

How do some suppliers work out how much I can earn?

Here is an excerpt from Octopus on how they work it out We’ll look at your historical smart meter data leading up to a Session, and calculate what you usually use at that time of day, on average.

If the Session is on a weekday, we’ll look at your half-hourly usage over the last 10 weekdays (excluding Saving Session days). If the Session is on a weekend, we’ll look at your half hourly usage over the last 4 weekend days.

We then use these half-hourly averages as a benchmark – so you’ll earn points for every kilowatt hour you save compared to that number during your Session.

To help work out what you could earn we have put together a case study –

Customer A has a base load of 500wH and has exported 3kWh to the grid then they have effectively saved 3.5kWh and paid £4 for each kWh saved earning £14 less say you put 4kWh of charge into your battery at 30p meaning a profit of £12.80 (£14 – £1.20).

Remember this is only an example of what you can earn but if you have a larger inverter and can export more, then you can earn even more money.

To date there have been 5 saving sessions with at least 1 more before the end of December and another 6 before the end of March 2024.

If you want to learn more about these saving sessions please read our article here and find out how you can opt in to save energy and earn money.

For example, Customer A who has a base load of 500wH and exports 3kWh can earn £14 by effectively saving 3.5kWh. Additionally, by charging a battery with 4kWh at a rate of 30p per kWh, a profit of £12.80 (£14 – £1.20) can be made. It’s important to note that this is just an illustration, and those with larger inverters and higher export capacity can potentially earn even more money.
