Our Expertise

First, we assess your property and calculate heat loss for each room. This helps us plan insulation, radiators or underfloor heating, flow temperatures and hot-water supply.

Next, we check the outdoor-unit position, electricity supply and any planning constraints. We then recommend, install and commission an MCS-compliant system. At handover, you receive operating guidance and certification, with ongoing servicing support available.

Heat Pump Options and Services in North Berwick

Our core heat pump services are Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump installation and air-to-air heat pump systems, serving North Berwick’s Victorian and Edwardian seafront properties, newer residential developments and rural properties on the outskirts of the town.

Every system and capacity is confirmed through a 3D internal LiDAR survey, room-by-room heat-loss assessment and technical design. Ground-source and water-source projects require separate specialist feasibility work and are not part of our standard installation service.

What Should Your Heat Pump Proposal Include?

Ask for the room-by-room heat-loss assessment, proposed equipment and design flow temperature, any radiator or pipework changes, hot-water provision, outdoor-unit location, electrical work, commissioning and aftercare. For properties in North Berwick’s conservation area or a listed building, also confirm the outdoor unit location and the planning or listed building consent position before the installation is agreed.

Read our heat pump installation cost guide and Scottish heat pump funding guide. Funding eligibility and approval must be checked for your own circumstances before committing to work.

Request a heat pump survey and include your North Berwick postcode, existing heating system and any planned renovation or insulation work.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air to provide space heating and hot water. They can perform well in Scottish conditions when correctly sized and designed around the property’s heat loss, emitters and target flow temperature.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground-source systems require suitable land, groundworks or borehole access and a specialist feasibility assessment. They are not part of our standard installation service; our core offering is Vaillant air source and air-to-air heat pump systems.

Water Source Heat Pumps

Water source systems may be possible where a suitable loch, river or groundwater source is available. These projects require specialist design and may need landowner consent, environmental assessment and regulatory approval before work can proceed.

Air-to-Air Heat Pumps

Air-to-air systems provide efficient space heating and, where the selected equipment allows, cooling. They can suit individual rooms, extensions and properties without wet central heating. System size, indoor-unit locations and permissions are confirmed by survey.

Why Choose a Heat Pump for Your North Berwick Property?

Heat pumps move heat rather than producing it through combustion. Their real-world efficiency depends on correct sizing, system design, flow temperature, controls, installation quality and how the property is used.

Designed Around Your Property

Performance and running costs depend on the building and the completed design. We calculate heat loss and review emitters and flow temperatures before providing property-specific estimates.

Low-Temperature Comfort

A well-designed heat pump normally provides steady, controlled heating over longer periods. Correct controls and suitable radiators or underfloor heating help the system operate efficiently.

Heating and Optional Cooling

Air-to-water systems provide heating and hot water. Separate air-to-air systems can provide heating and, where the chosen equipment permits, cooling. We recommend the correct solution for the property.

Lower-Carbon Heating

Heat pumps use electricity and produce no combustion emissions at the property. Actual carbon savings vary with system performance, the heating system being replaced and the electricity supply.

Designed for Scottish Conditions

Modern heat pumps can operate in cold weather, but reliable winter performance depends on accurate sizing, appropriate flow temperatures and professional commissioning.

Home Energy Scotland Support

Eligible Scottish homeowners may receive up to £7,500 toward a heat pump, with an optional interest-free loan for any remaining costs. Funding is subject to eligibility, current scheme rules and availability.

Heat Pump Servicing & Maintenance in North Berwick

Regular servicing helps maintain safe, reliable operation and can support manufacturer warranty requirements. The required checks and service interval depend on the heat pump model and its warranty terms.

Annual Heat Pump Service

Our standard annual air source heat pump service is £180 + VAT for a single system. We inspect the system, review operation and controls, clean accessible components where required and identify any recommended remedial work. Pricing for multiple units, unusual equipment or additional remedial work is confirmed separately.

Fault Diagnosis and Repairs

We investigate reduced output, unusual noise, error codes and other heat pump faults by appointment. Attendance times and repair times depend on engineer availability, diagnosis and parts supply; we do not promise a fixed emergency response window.

Service Coverage

Our heat pump servicing team covers North Berwick, East Lothian, the wider Lothians and other parts of Scotland by arrangement. For systems installed by others, we review the make, model and available documentation before confirming attendance.

Why Choose Renew-Able Solutions as Your Heat Pump Installer in North Berwick

Established Scottish Installer

Renew-Able Solutions has served Scottish customers since 2018. Our heat pump projects are delivered by qualified survey, design and installation personnel, with responsibilities confirmed for each project.

MCS-Certified Installations

We are MCS certified for heat pump work under certificate NAP68980 and are also registered with NAPIT and TrustMark. The required MCS documentation is provided for qualifying completed installations.

Consumer Protection and Warranties

Our RECC membership provides a recognised consumer-code framework. Deposit protection, workmanship cover and manufacturer warranties are explained in the customer’s proposal and contract because the applicable terms vary by project and product.

Domestic and Larger Projects

We design systems around calculated heat demand rather than standard property-size assumptions. Larger homes and suitable commercial buildings are assessed individually for equipment capacity, electrical supply, emitters and installation constraints.

Scottish Funding Guidance

We can provide the technical documents needed for a Home Energy Scotland application and explain what the grant and loan cover for your property. Our Home Energy Scotland guide sets out the current terms and the application process.

Clear, Property-Specific Advice

We explain proposed costs, expected performance, controls, maintenance and warranty terms using the survey and heat-loss design. Savings and payback vary, so we do not rely on generic financial promises.

We were looking for batteries to complement our pv panels since on sunny days we never used all the electricity generated. We are also on off peak for charging our car. Alan was superb. He explained it all clearly, answered all questions knowledgeably and was very comfortable to deal with. The job was done on time, with no fuss and, very importantly, we felt very comfortable having them in the house. Delighted at the battery performance. It not only worked to store solar but we could choose to charge on very low overnight rates to use in daytime. Our electricity bill literally halved from March (pre install) to April (2023). Professional, courteous and very skilled. Subsequently we decided to augment the system with a second battery and again they were flawless in advice, integrating it into the system and commissioning. Now almost two years on from initial installation it is all still working perfectly. What more could you want?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a heat pump outdoor unit need planning permission in North Berwick's conservation area?

North Berwick’s conservation area covers a significant part of the town, particularly the historic High Street and seafront. Standard Permitted Development rights that apply to most heat pump installations may not apply to properties within the boundary.

Where consent is needed, East Lothian Council assesses the visual impact and proposed location of the outdoor unit. Properties outside the conservation area are generally straightforward. Our heat pump planning permission guide explains how the rules apply to different property types.

Can a heat pump be installed on a Victorian or Edwardian seafront property in North Berwick?

Yes in many cases. The main considerations are whether the property is listed, whether it falls within the conservation area, and whether the existing radiators are adequate for the lower flow temperatures a heat pump operates at.

North Berwick’s seafront has a significant number of Victorian and Edwardian villas, many with well-oriented rooms and generous roof areas. Our guide on heat pumps in older Scottish homes explains how we approach the radiator and emitter assessment for stone-built and traditional properties.

Does salt air from the Firth of Forth affect a heat pump outdoor unit?

Heat pump outdoor units are designed for external use and are generally built to handle coastal environments, but salt air can accelerate surface corrosion on exposed components over time.

We take the coastal exposure into account when selecting equipment and positioning the outdoor unit, aiming for a sheltered location where possible. An annual service check includes inspecting external components for any signs of deterioration, which is worth noting when budgeting for ongoing maintenance.

Can a heat pump be installed in a holiday let or second home in North Berwick?

Yes. A heat pump heats the property whether or not it is occupied, which suits the intermittent usage pattern of a holiday let or second home. North Berwick is a popular short-stay destination, and several properties in the area are operated as holiday lets.

Running costs and system performance depend on how the heating is managed between lettings. We can advise on suitable controls and scheduling during the survey and handover so the system operates efficiently when the property is unoccupied.

Where can a heat pump outdoor unit be sited on a coastal property in North Berwick?

Permitted Development rules require the outdoor unit to be positioned away from a neighbour’s window or door and, in many cases, not visible from the road. On exposed coastal sites, a sheltered location on the rear or side of the building is usually preferable for both planning and practical reasons.

We identify the best location during the survey, taking access, pipework routes, noise and local wind exposure into account. For properties in the conservation area, we also consider the visual impact on the streetscape as part of the location assessment.

Can I combine a heat pump with solar panels in North Berwick?

Yes. A heat pump uses electricity to heat your home, so pairing it with a solar PV system reduces the amount of grid electricity you pay for across the year.

East Lothian’s coastal position means meaningful solar generation for more months of the year than much of Scotland. We design and install both technologies and can assess how they would work together for your North Berwick property and usage pattern.

Can a heat pump be installed in a listed building in North Berwick?

Listed building consent from East Lothian Council is required before any alterations to a listed building, including fitting an outdoor heat pump unit. The application is assessed on visual impact and the proposed location.

North Berwick has listed properties across the town, particularly in the conservation area. Rear gardens, outbuildings and less visible locations are generally viewed more favourably by the planning authority. We advise on the options and confirm the planning position as part of the survey.

Do you cover other East Lothian towns as well as North Berwick?

Yes. We serve the whole of East Lothian including Haddington, Dunbar, Musselburgh, Tranent, Prestonpans, Longniddry, Gullane and surrounding villages, as well as Edinburgh and wider Scotland.

All East Lothian properties connect through SP Energy Networks. Include your postcode when you get in touch and we will confirm coverage and arrange a survey.
