Yes, many older Scottish homes can be suitable for an air source heat pump. The age of the property is not the deciding factor. What determines whether an older home is suitable?

A heat pump must be designed around the heat the property loses on a cold design day. A proper assessment should consider:

  • the proposed design flow temperature;
  • hot-water demand and space for a suitable cylinder;

Does an old house need to be fully insulated first?

No. A home does not need to meet a particular age or insulation stereotype before a heat pump can be considered. However, insulation and draught reduction can lower the heat demand, reduce the required heat-pump capacity and help the system operate at a lower flow temperature.

The right approach is to assess the home as it stands and then model worthwhile improvements. In a traditional solid-wall or listed property, building-fabric work must be appropriate for the construction. Moisture movement, ventilation, heritage restrictions and the risk of trapping damp should be considered before recommending internal or external wall insulation.

Will the existing radiators work?

What about solid stone walls?

Do heat pumps work through Scottish winters?

Modern air source heat pumps are designed to operate in cold weather, but winter performance is not guaranteed by the product name alone. The unit must be selected using the property’s design heat loss and the manufacturer’s output data at the required outdoor and flow temperatures.

Correct sizing, emitter output, water flow, weather compensation, commissioning and customer controls all affect comfort and efficiency. Oversimplified claims based only on a headline minimum operating temperature do not show how the complete heating system will perform.

Will a heat pump reduce running costs?

It may, but savings should never be promised from the property’s age or existing fuel alone. Running costs depend on annual heat demand, seasonal efficiency, electricity tariff, the heating system being replaced, controls, hot-water use and household behaviour.
