Heat Pump Grants in Scotland: Funding, Eligibility & Installation Costs

A heat-pump grant does not automatically make an installation free. The amount you pay depends on the approved funding and the complete installation cost. This guide was reviewed on 17 September 2026; check the official scheme terms before committing to work.

Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan

Eligible homeowners can currently seek up to £7,500 in heat-pump grant funding, plus an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500. A £1,500 grant uplift may apply to qualifying rural or island homes. The property must be an existing Scottish home that you own and occupy as your only or primary residence. Funding is subject to availability and a written offer.

Start with Home Energy Scotland’s official guidance and current conditions. Confirm eligibility, the installation requirements and approval timing directly with the scheme before work starts.

Other support for households

Warmer Homes Scotland is a separate route for eligible households needing help with heating and energy efficiency. The assessment determines the appropriate measures and support; a heat pump is not automatically the recommended measure. Ask Home Energy Scotland to assess the available route for your circumstances.

For any supplier or local-authority offer, check the current programme, eligibility, proposed measures, customer contribution and approved delivery route. Do not rely on an old article or an advertised “free heat pump” without a written assessment and offer.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is different

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to England and Wales. It is not the funding route for a property in Edinburgh or elsewhere in Scotland.

Understand the full installation cost

Ask for a quotation that identifies the heat pump, hot-water cylinder, radiators or other emitters, pipework, electrical work, controls, commissioning and any necessary building work. Confirm which items are included in the funding offer and which remain your responsibility. An optional loan must be repaid and should be kept separate from the grant in your comparison.

A survey should establish the property’s heat loss, hot-water demand, emitter suitability and practical equipment locations. Our heat-pump installation service explains the assessment; the Edinburgh installation-cost guide covers the quotation.

Before you commit

  • Check the current scheme directly and obtain the required written approval.
  • Compare the full installation scope, exclusions and any customer contribution.
  • Check the chosen installer and equipment meet the scheme requirements.
  • Keep the quotation, funding offer, commissioning records and warranties together.

Discuss a heat-pump installation

Renew-Able Solutions can review your property requirements and discuss a suitable installation assessment. Funding decisions are made by the scheme provider.

Request a heat-pump survey enquiry with your postcode, current heating system and a short description of the property.
