Is a heat pump worth it? For a suitable home, a well-designed heat pump can provide comfortable heating with lower reliance on fossil fuels. The answer depends on what it replaces, the building’s heat demand, installation work and the electricity tariff. Savings are not automatic.
When is a heat pump worth considering?
Start with a room-by-room heat-loss assessment. This helps determine the equipment size and the radiator or underfloor-heating output needed at the proposed water temperature. Oversizing equipment or relying on an existing boiler rating can lead to a poor result.
Homes using expensive direct electric heating, oil or other fuels may have a different financial case from a home with an efficient gas boiler. Compare the actual alternatives available to your property rather than a headline percentage saving.
How should you compare running costs?
A useful starting calculation is electricity unit price divided by seasonal performance factor: this estimates the energy cost per kWh of heat. For a boiler, divide the fuel unit price by its seasonal efficiency. Include standing charges where they remain payable, maintenance and any backup heating.
For example, an assumed electricity price of 24p/kWh and seasonal performance factor of 3 would give an energy-only heat cost of 8p/kWh. This is an illustration, not a current tariff or performance promise. Your designer should provide property-specific assumptions and explain how colder weather affects operation.
What changes might your home need?
An air-to-water system may need larger radiators, suitable pipework, a hot-water cylinder and an outdoor-unit position with appropriate airflow and noise consideration. Insulation and draught reduction can reduce the heating demand. Not every property needs the same upgrades.
Heat pumps often work best with longer operating periods and lower flow temperatures. Good controls, commissioning and a clear handover matter as much as the equipment brand. Our Edinburgh heat pump installation service assesses these factors together.
What funding is available in Scotland?
Eligible households may receive support through the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan. Eligibility, property requirements and available funding must be checked before committing to work. The scheme requires the appropriate offer and approval process; do not assume an installation already started will qualify.

Will a heat pump also cool or filter the air?
Do not assume this. Air-to-water central heating and air-to-air heating and cooling are different arrangements. Cooling and air-filtration capabilities depend on the specified system and its emitters.
What should a useful quotation include?
Ask for the heat-loss assessment, design flow temperature, expected seasonal performance, emitter changes, hot-water arrangements, electrical work, warranties and servicing requirements. Compare complete installed solutions. The Energy Saving Trust’s air-source heat pump guide provides independent background.
