Microinverters vs DC optimisers is a choice about how a solar array manages individual panels. Both can provide module-level control, but they convert electricity differently. The best option depends on the roof, proposed equipment and complete system design.
What is the difference?
A microinverter converts a panel’s DC output to AC near the panel. A DC optimiser adjusts the panel’s DC operating point, while a compatible central inverter performs the DC-to-AC conversion. A conventional string inverter can also be a suitable solution where the array layout and shade conditions allow it.
Do they solve shading?
Module-level control can reduce some mismatch losses and improve visibility of individual panel performance. It cannot recover sunlight that never reaches a shaded panel. Ask for a shade assessment and an estimate of the additional annual benefit, rather than a universal output-uplift percentage.
Efficiency, clipping and compatibility
Compare whole-system performance. An optimiser’s conversion efficiency alone excludes the central inverter’s losses. Likewise, a panel’s wattage and a microinverter’s AC limit describe different things. Some clipping may be an intentional design trade-off; the relevant question is its effect on annual yield and value.
Check approved panel pairings, voltage and current limits, string rules, branch circuits and monitoring equipment. Enphase’s design documentation illustrates the need for model-specific compatibility checks.
Maintenance and reliability
A central inverter is usually more accessible, while panel-level electronics may require roof access for replacement. An individual device fault can have different consequences depending on the architecture and failure. No arrangement guarantees uninterrupted generation or removes all electrical risk.
Compare warranty scope, labour and access costs, monitoring access and support. A longer component warranty is not automatically a longer warranty on the complete installation.
Can either arrangement work with batteries?
Yes, with the appropriate storage design. Backup capability depends on the complete system and its controls, not just the choice of optimiser or microinverter. Read our AC and DC coupled battery comparison.
