PAS 63100: Home Battery Installation and Fire Safety

PAS 63100 is a specification addressing protection against fire in battery energy storage installations for dwellings. For homeowners, the key point is that battery location and installation design matter alongside the equipment’s capacity and price.

What does PAS 63100 cover?

The specification sets out requirements for managing fire risk in domestic battery energy storage installations. It should be considered with the applicable electrical, building and product requirements. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions or a property-specific design.

Read the BSI overview of PAS 63100 for the scope and access to the specification. A standard should not be described as a blanket statutory ban without checking the relevant rules and circumstances.

Why battery location matters

A convenient space is not automatically a suitable one. Your installer should assess escape routes, occupied rooms, nearby materials, access for maintenance and the consequences of a fault. External equipment also needs a suitable environment, mounting and protection.

An IP rating describes specified resistance to ingress. It does not establish that every outdoor position, loft or cupboard is acceptable. Temperature limits, clearances, loading and the manufacturer’s siting instructions still apply.

Does battery chemistry remove the risk?

No. An LFP label does not make a battery fireproof. Protection depends on the whole product, battery management, electrical safeguards, installation and condition. Do not use chemistry alone to decide where equipment can go.

What should you ask before installation?

Ask why the proposed location is suitable, which requirements the design follows, how access and escape routes are protected, and what commissioning and handover records you will receive. Make sure the quotation identifies the exact equipment and any additional building or electrical work.

For an existing battery, retain its documentation and arrange professional assessment if you are concerned about its location or condition. Do not relocate or alter it yourself.
