Commercial solar costs in Scotland vary by site, so there is no reliable single price for an installation. The quote depends on system capacity, the building, access, electrical work, grid requirements and the agreed scope. A low headline cost per kWp can be misleading if it omits important work or realistic energy-use assumptions.
The better question is: what will a properly designed system cost for this site, and what proportion of its generation can the business use effectively?
Our commercial solar design and installation service brings these requirements together in a site-specific proposal. For an example of an integrated installation, see our 143kWp commercial solar project with battery storage and wind generation. Its design and scale are specific to that site; it is not a price or payback promise for another business.
What affects commercial solar costs?
System capacity and equipment
Larger arrays may achieve economies of scale, but capacity alone does not determine price. Panel, inverter, monitoring and protection specifications all matter, as do warranties, manufacturer support and replacement planning.
Roof type and condition
Flat and pitched commercial roofs require different mounting approaches. Roof covering, condition, structural capacity, wind exposure, rooflights and safe access can affect both design and cost. Also identify necessary roof repairs or strengthening separately.
Access and installation logistics
Scaffolding, edge protection, lifting equipment, restricted delivery times, occupied premises and complex cable routes can materially affect a project. Therefore, the quotation should state which access and lifting arrangements it includes.
Electrical infrastructure
The existing distribution equipment and proposed connection point need assessment. Cable routes, switchgear changes, protection, metering and shutdown arrangements may add to the scope.
Grid connection
The distribution network operator may approve the proposed capacity, require an export limitation scheme, request changes or identify network works. First, establish the relevant process before estimating costs and timescales.
Planning and professional services
Some projects require planning input, structural engineering, specialist surveys or design coordination. Then confirm which services the price includes and which remain provisional or outside the scope.
Commercial solar costs and the business case
A credible appraisal distinguishes between solar electricity used on site and electricity exported. The value of each depends on the business tariff and export arrangement.
Ask every provider to show:
- expected annual generation;
- the source and date of the consumption data;
- assumed self-consumption and export;
- electricity-price and export-price assumptions;
- degradation, maintenance and inverter assumptions;
- simple payback and the basis for longer-term figures; and
- sensitivity to lower generation or changed energy prices.
Avoid treating an unqualified “typical payback” as a prediction for your business.
Are grants available for commercial solar in Scotland?
Funding programmes change and eligibility can be narrow. Business Energy Scotland currently states that the Scottish Government SME Loan Scheme is not accepting applications for solar PV projects, although other sources of public funding may sometimes be available. Always check the current official position at the time of application.
Businesses may also wish to ask their accountant whether capital allowances apply to their circumstances. HMRC guidance identifies solar panels as special-rate expenditure, while Annual Investment Allowance may apply to qualifying plant and machinery subject to eligibility and limits. Confirm this with a tax adviser; an installer cannot guarantee your tax treatment.
What information improves an initial estimate?
Provide the site address, recent bills, 12 months of interval data, roof plans or photographs, operating hours, planned electrical loads and any roof-condition information. As a result, better input data produces a more useful early-stage proposal.
How to compare commercial solar costs and quotations
Compare scope and assumptions, not just the total price. Check equipment, access, structural responsibility, grid application, planning, monitoring, commissioning, warranties, documentation, maintenance options and exclusions.
Renew-Able Solutions assesses commercial sites across Edinburgh, East Lothian and wider Central and East Scotland. Send us your site information to discuss the appropriate feasibility stage.
Frequently asked questions
Can you give a commercial solar price without visiting the site?
An initial desktop estimate may be possible from bills, interval data, plans and aerial imagery. However, a firm proposal normally needs confirmed roof, structural, electrical and access information.
What does cost per kWp mean?
It divides the project price by the system’s installed peak capacity. It can help compare similarly scoped projects, but it does not show energy yield, self-consumption, equipment quality or excluded work.
Is the cheapest commercial solar quote the best value?
Not necessarily. A useful comparison includes design assumptions, equipment, installation scope, network and planning responsibilities, warranties, monitoring, documentation and expected usable generation.
