Heat pump safety matters in homes with children and pets. A suitable installation, sensible positioning and a clear handover help you use the system confidently. Heat pumps can serve family homes, but no heating appliance is entirely without risk.
Heat pump safety starts with the installation
First, discuss how your family uses the property. Show the installer play areas, paths, pet runs and places where children could reach equipment. Ask them to explain the proposed position and access for servicing.
A heat pump moves heat using electricity. An air-to-water system can supply radiators, underfloor heating and a hot-water cylinder. Our heat pump installation service starts with a property assessment and system design.
Can heat pumps cause burns or a fire?
Avoid blanket claims that every surface stays cool or that a heat pump has no fire risk. Pipework and hot water can reach temperatures that cause injury. Electrical equipment and refrigerants also need appropriate installation and care.
For example, Vaillant aroTHERM plus systems use R290 refrigerant. R290 is flammable, so the installer must follow the safety requirements for the exact model. Read Vaillant’s R290 guidance alongside the product instructions.
Children, pets and the outdoor unit

Keep children from playing with or climbing on the unit. Likewise, keep pets away from cables, pipework and moving parts. Do not remove covers or reach through grilles.
Keep toys, pet bedding and stored items clear of the equipment. If you want a fence or screen, ask the installer to confirm a suitable design first. Airflow, access and any model-specific safety area must remain clear.
Everyday heat pump safety and maintenance
Follow the operating instructions supplied with your system. Carry out only the user checks they describe, and leave repairs to a competent engineer. Do not alter safety devices or attempt to repair damaged cables yourself.
At handover, ask how to read the controls, recognise a fault and arrange servicing. Keep the manuals and service records together. If an error returns, record the message and contact your installer rather than repeatedly resetting the system.
Questions to ask before installation
Before accepting a proposal, ask which equipment the quotation includes and where it will sit. Also ask who will explain the controls, what maintenance the manufacturer requires, and who to contact for aftercare.
Tell us about access concerns at the survey, including young children or pets. We can then discuss them alongside the heating design. For the next step, contact Renew-Able Solutions or read our heat pump installation cost guide.
