Are Solar Panels Worth It in Edinburgh?

Are solar panels worth it in Edinburgh? They can be, when the roof, installation price and household electricity use support the investment. Scotland’s daylight can produce useful solar electricity, but a reliable decision needs a property-specific forecast rather than a guaranteed savings percentage.

How much electricity could your roof generate?

A survey should assess roof direction, pitch, shade, available space and condition. The proposed panel capacity in kWp describes the array’s rated power; annual generation in kWh estimates the energy it could produce over a year. These are different measurements.

Ask how the generation estimate accounts for shade, inverter limits and losses. Edinburgh homes will produce more during long summer days and less in winter. An annual generation total similar to your annual consumption does not mean you can avoid importing electricity.

What makes solar panels worthwhile?

Electricity used directly in the home can avoid an import purchase. Exported electricity earns the applicable export rate, if you have an eligible arrangement. Compare both values using your actual tariff rather than assuming every generated kWh saves the full import price.

Daytime demand, an electric vehicle and flexible appliances may help you use more generation. A home battery can shift electricity into later hours, but adds cost and energy losses. Assess the extra benefit separately.

How do you estimate payback?

A simple starting point is installation cost divided by estimated annual net benefit. The annual benefit combines avoided imports and export income, with operating costs allowed for. This simple calculation excludes financing, changing tariffs, degradation and future replacement costs, so request a range of outcomes rather than a single promise.

What about grants, VAT and export payments?

Do not assume a grant is available for every homeowner. Eligibility and scheme availability vary. The solar and battery VAT guide explains the current qualifying relief and scheduled April 2027 change.

Export payments are payment for eligible electricity sent to the grid, not a grant towards the installation. Read our Smart Export Guarantee guide and check supplier terms before budgeting income.

Will solar keep the house powered during an outage?

Ordinary grid-connected solar does not provide automatic backup. Even with storage, backup requires compatible equipment, suitable electrical design and agreed supported loads. Discuss this at quotation stage if resilience is an objective.

What should you do next?

Gather annual electricity use, your import and export prices, roof photographs and plans for future demand. Compare an installer’s proposal with independent Energy Saving Trust guidance.
