Why Choose Solar PV? Benefits and Realistic Expectations

Why choose solar PV? It can help a household generate some of its own electricity and reduce purchased energy. The value depends on the roof, demand, installation cost and tariffs—not a promise of complete independence or permanently rising electricity prices.

Generate electricity where it is used

Solar panels produce electricity during daylight. Direct household use can avoid imports, while eligible surplus can earn export payments. A forecast should distinguish generation, self-consumption and exports.

Reduce exposure to some price changes

Generating electricity can reduce the volume bought from a supplier, but most connected homes still import energy and pay standing charges. Tariffs can rise or fall. Assess the proposal across several scenarios rather than assuming decades of fixed price growth.

Use storage where it adds value

A battery can move some electricity into later hours or support suitable off-peak charging. It adds cost and losses. It does not make summer generation available throughout winter or automatically supply the home during a power cut.

Keep environmental claims realistic

Solar generates without burning fuel at the property, but manufacturing, installation and end-of-life treatment have impacts. Reducing purchased electricity and reducing the household’s full carbon footprint are related, but different, measures.
